HMI First Article Inspection: Inside a Real Delivery Package
A useful HMI first article inspection package answers more than “does the sample look right?” It helps your engineering and purchasing teams connect the delivered assembly to its drawings, materials and recorded checks. Before the next order, you need to know what was inspected, which sample the results describe and what still needs your approval.

The ten-page package brings together design references, dimensional measurements, contact-resistance results and a final inspection sheet. Here is what a buyer can learn from it.
What the HMI first article inspection package contained
The submitted package identified five samples. Its design section covered the overlay drawing, assembly layers and materials, artwork and circuit layout. The inspection section added measured dimensions, a contact-resistance matrix and a final disposition record.
The value is the connection between those records. An artwork reference identifies what the operator sees; the assembly structure shows how the layers fit together; inspection results document selected checks on the submitted parts. Together, these records give both teams a clearer basis for technical review.
Start with the assembly, not just the front surface
The structure drawing identifies the overlay, adhesive layers, illumination layer, spacer, circuit layer, metal domes, touch panel and bezel. It also shows how the touch panel sits within the assembly. This gives the reviewer a way to discuss interfaces that a finished-product photograph cannot explain.
For your own project, ask which components are fixed and which may change. Then confirm the drawing revision, assembly thickness, mounting space and cable access. Agreeing these inputs during engineering development makes the later sample review more specific.
Read the dimensional evidence at its actual sample size
The dimensional report lists 20 inspection entries, including measured features and thread checks. It records CMM measurements and Go/No-Go checks, with the listed entries marked OK. The sheet identifies one sampled piece from a five-piece quantity.
That distinction matters. A buyer can review the measurements against the stated tolerances, but should not describe this sheet as dimensional inspection of all five pieces. For an HMI first article inspection, agree which features require measurement and how many samples each check covers before the parts arrive.
Follow each keypad result to a defined position
The contact-resistance report uses a numbered keypad diagram and a matrix covering 32 positions across five samples. It records individual values against a stated limit, with the result cells marked accepted. This is more useful for review than a single statement that the keypad works.
A position-based record helps your team connect a question to a specific input location. However, contact resistance alone does not establish key life, host-system behavior or performance in every operating environment. Add those checks to the agreed scope when your application needs them.
Separate supplier release from customer approval
The final inspection sheet covers appearance, printing, mechanical and electrical items. It records an accept disposition for five pieces and a zero-defect entry for the sampled quantity on that sheet. Those statements describe this supplier inspection record, not a long-term production defect rate.
The customer-signature field on the cover is blank in the supplied copy. Accordingly, this case demonstrates a documented supplier sample submission; it does not establish signed customer approval. Keep your own acceptance decision linked to the exact sample, revision and any open actions.
Three questions to ask before accepting a delivery package
Do the document list and attachments agree? In this example, a contact-resistance report is present even though its cover checkbox is unmarked. Check the actual attachments as well as the document index.
Does each result state its coverage? The dimensional sheet and resistance matrix use different sample coverage. Confirm the method, quantity and criteria for each check instead of assuming one sampling statement covers the whole package.
Are requirements clearly separated from evidence? A materials-restriction appendix states requirements; it is not itself a laboratory result. Likewise, a drawing note is a design instruction, not proof that an environmental or endurance test was performed.
